UVNET have been fighting spam (unwanted email) since 1992.
We can help you to live a SPAM free life.

Our advanced SPAM filtering stops the junk reaching your Inbox, a far more efficient spam prevention that anything that you could possibly run on your own PC. After all, once it's in you Inbox your PC will have to download it.
How does it work?

Software on our mail server scans each email as it arrives. Any message matching one of our 100's of tests is marked as Spam. Some of the SPAM rules are added to or amended on a regular basis.

How do I enable it?

You can do so yourself by running the command 'telnet bbs.uv.net' (You can run this command by clicking on the START menu and then selecting the Run option). Once the telnet window appears, it will connect to our bbs server. Enter your UVNET username and password. From the text menu presented to you, Press O (other), A (Account), C (Custom), S (Spam).

The window that appears has a number of fields that you can modify. The defaults are shown to the left of each field. Enter values that deviate from the default and press Ctrl F to finish. See later in this document on more details on configuring the anti-spam system.

Confused? UVNET, Will you please just go and enable the SPAM filtering for me?

Yes, we certainly can. Just email support@uv.net, requesting SPAM filtering to be enabled on your account.
You might also want to supply answers to the following two questions :-

Do you wish to block inbound HTML email to your Inbox? (No by default)
Do you wish to impose an inbound email size (in KiloBytes)? (Not restricted by default)

How soon does my SPAM blocking become active?

Any changes made via the anti-spam setup screen take up-to 15 minutes to become active.

What other alternatives do I have?

Don't give your email address to anyone other than those you can trust.
Request an email alias from UVNET. e.g. j843@uv.net
Use your email alias when ever possible for filling in online forms, Newsgroups, Discussion boards etc.
Every so often, request a new email alias. Your old alias will be removed from our system and you can continue to use your new alias. Any email lists that you may have in-voluntarily appeared on will find themselves holding onto an invalid email address.

More about spam.

Although we use various methods of SPAM protection on our servers, the fault really lies with the many mail servers on the internet that do not use any form of SPAM protection, leaving their doors open for spam distribution.
At UVNET, we take great care to ensure that your email is received reliably so we have to be equally cautious of any anti-spam measures that we activate.

If you continue to receive SPAM, contact us and we'll do our best to help you.

Remember, make sure you keep your fixed account email address secure and only available to those you can trust.

Problems with anti-spam measures.

It is possible that legitimate email is being bounced when you think it shouldn't. It is equally possible for spam to get through when you were hoping that it wouldn't.

The section on Configuring (see below) should help you to customize the anti-spam system to make the most of the anti-spam software in place.

Stopping spam from bouncing back to the sender.

You can opt to not bounce spam to the sender. If you're losing faith in anti-spam then why not ask the spam system to not bounce the email back and to leave it in your inbox? This way, any spam will be marked and it will give you an indication if the anti-spam system is working for you. Setting your 'Place Spam' option to i will leave any detected spam in your Inbox.

The Inbox.Spam folder

Any spam that has been bounced by default is saved into the your Inbox.Spam folder (accessible using our web interface to your email, also accessible to IMAP mail users). Your spam-detection is configured by default to 'archive' your email. Archived email is placed in this folder.

spam_accept.txt

If you keep getting problems with spam from a given source bouncing? Simply create a spam_accept.txt file (you can use NOTEPAD) and place the email address in the spam_accept.txt.. Upload the spam_accept.txt file to your FTP area on our server, placing the file in the 'ftp' folder. Any email from email addresses in your spam_accept.txt file are accepted without undergoing any spam checks.

It works!

A successful anti-spam setup will see a major reduction in the volume of spam you receive. It's already reduced the volume of spam I receive from 200 messages a day to one or two. Many reports from satisfied users boast over 1500 junk messages having been bounced and archived in their Inbox.Spam folder in just a few weeks.

Remember, if it's not working for you, it's easy to disable. You are in full control.
